The search was brought out by the department's Medicines Regulatory Group.

Its senior enforcement office, Peter Moore, said: "It is important that we get the message throughout that unlicensed medicines can be harmful.

"These kinds of items being sold, typically online, have gone through no quality assurance and there can be no warranty about their security.

"You merely do not know what you are taking or the conditions these products were made in. More notably, you do not know the effect drugs like this may have on your health."
